Here are some quick tips and values worthy of sharing for the young professionals out there who are trying to survive life in the urban setting or corporate world as freelancers or employed architects. Fill up your thoughts with these as you face the coming year.

  1. Know Your Worth- Even if you give all of your skills and efforts, if your client doesn’t appreciate your worth, you’re only wasting your time. You must know your worth before you present yourself to people, for them to learn how to respond to you and read you. Referrals doesn’t really matter nowadays, but Impression defines everything.
  2. Respect your seniors-Older people make the most money out of younger generations. Most of them never really accept that these young people are better or wiser than them because of their own reasons. They may say young people are better because of technology but deep inside of them, old ways are harder to beat. Conflict sometimes arise between these generations when it comes to communication and understanding. But what I’ve learned so far, is that no matter how hard you feel to understand your seniors, respect them. We can’t be here without them. Conflicts come and go, but your character can bring your anywhere.
  3. Remember you are a Licensed Professional- If your clients scrutinize every “cent” where their money goes, you’re not doing business, you’re doing them favor as their professional alalay not a Professional Architect. Have you ever seen a Nutrition facts with costs listed beside it where you can add,see the total price and compare it to the current market price? Doing your job fairly and transparently doesn’t mean you have to explain where your professional fee goes up to the smallest bill. You studied hard to earn what you have right now, so don’t feel ashamed when asking for your fee. You worked hard for it.
  4. Life is worth living if you say so.- 2018 has been so hard for us honestly. It makes us fear the coming year 2019. Though we are able to conquer every possible storm life throws at us, we are bracing ourselves for more. Life is said to be never easy as far as the world says. But with Jesus though we believe life will never be easy, it will always be worth living.
  5. Don’t make your own grave. If people hurt you, it’s better for them to hurt you than you hurting them with your double edged sword, your tongue. It will be better if hurtful words are sometimes left unsaid.
  6. You may get angry, but don't let yourself be mad and feel the same way before the sun sets. Life is too short for you to waste thinking of unhealthy thoughts.
  7. Learn in your own pace- If you think you know it all because of everything you’ve accomplished, then you’re right- you’re just thinking of it, but not even close to half of it. Learning is a continuous process. Attend every seminar you can. Read every book you can but remember to enjoy the process.
  8. Friends Come and Go.-You thought each of your “all-known” friends are slowly fading away, see Ghosting. The worst part is not even losing your closest friends, but them choosing to lose you. Still, you must choose your life to go on, thank those who still stands with you and remember those who have forgotten you with a light and welcoming heart.
  9. Life is a Cycle.- You thought life is repetitive and everything is just a mere time travelling of thoughts, emotions, energy, and spirits, in this vast space of bursting bubbles from mixed characters of people you meet, pass by or welcome in your life. Learn to find your peace and purpose in the midst of that cycle.
  10. Everyone makes mistakes, including ourselves, even our best friends, our boss, our professors, our parents and our pets, therefore, forgiveness must flow in our blood limitless. Everyone will always give reasons to upset us, but we must not let the anger caused by these casualties ruin our short days. Rather than be dragged by the gravity of our short-temperedness, we must learn to lift each other and see the joy in this short time God has given us to live.
  11. Make mistakes but learn from it- If you lost a lot in the Stock Market, just think of those who lost more but learned to master mind over matter. Surely it will pass. Stocks goes up and down. Just patiently wait if this wasn’t the time to sell stocks. Never be greedy, never fear of losing and never chase what’s not yours. Experience is really an expensive learning method. While you’re young, learn to invest. Young people have plenty of time to make mistakes.
  12. Your Signature says it all-Once the deal is done, don't undo it. Stick by your words, your integrity and your promise. Read every agreement you sign. Protect yourself by knowing first where or what you place your signature. It’s not just a mere written mark in ink. It will define you and your future. Remember your 15 year civil liability as an Architect with every page of plans you sign.
  13. You are a Work in Progress- If you think life passes you by, and here you are chasing wind. Don't forget that you’re a masterpiece which is a work in progress.
  14. Protect your thoughts- 2018 just tried to kill and let everyone suffer in different ways. Mental health became a worldwide issue where almost everyone has their own story of survival from anxiety and depression. It’s normal to feel sad sometimes but it isn’t normal to dig up every saddening past you have and play all of it repetitively in your mind, every single day. You will eventually breakdown from doing this 24/7 and could result to a day to day burn out. I think it is better to be living with a simple thinking mind than being a “know-it-all” , trying to control everything.
  15. Start to accept professional responsibilities, even if it’s against your will. Great example is the CPD requirement by PRC in renewing professional licenses. By existing laws, CPD is an additional learning experience not a mandatory learning requirement. Since Authorities have already start implementing the CPD law, requiring every professional to undertake seminars in exchange for points to renew licenses, what can a mere young professional do but accept it even if it’s a burden us, start-ups.
  16. Be a wise Start-up Entrepreneur.- Only few people understand and buy art, so showcase it in a form people will appreciate it, not just in blank canvas frames. But even if young people love merchandise and prints on shirts, as a start-up entrepreneur, don’t throw all your money in an experiment you can’t afford to lose. Be creative but always be wary of your expenses and target profits. Create your own buffer and make calculated risks.
  17. You may feel loneliness. That time where your closest friends in the office or your best pals and colleagues are starting to take their paths just as you are. It’s okay to feel lonely. But don’t get lonely for too long. Find someone who knows how to listen with all your troubles and fill you up with joy. Set yourself free from any form of negativity before the year ends. Spread love and joy. Embrace the love of the everlasting God, who will never make you feel alone. He will be with you for all the years to come.
  18. Young people get tired too. You feel like you’ve lost almost all your positivism and energy this year, but take heart because another year is about to come. So better brace yourself and absorb as much energy you need for the coming New Year!
